AdvocacY from A-Y: Approaching Congressional Staffers

On September 26th, the Government Affairs Industry Network (GAIN) partnered with CQ Roll Call to host our inaugural event in the “Advocacy from A-Y” series. “Advocacy from A-Y” is a professional development series directed towards current and future lobbyists who are committed to learning more about becoming impactful advocates and building successful advocacy programs.

This panel focused on approaching congressional staffers. Moderated by CQ Roll Call’s Kate Ackley, panelists Steve Taylor, Senior Vice President and Counsel for Public Policy for United Way, Katie Schubert, Chief Advocacy Officer of Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Saat Alety, Legislative Assistant for Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC),and Kirk McPike, Chief of Staff for Rep. Mark Takano (D-CA), shared insight on how to best get your message through to congressional staffers.

Panelist shared tips ranging from getting through the email clutter to managing the ethical boundaries with personal and business relationships with staffers. When it comes to grassroots, panelists agreed that conducting fly-ins with constituents is the more effective way of advocating over sending in form emails. And most importantly, establishing professional relationships with staffers is one of the most impactful ways to get your message across.

GAIN would like to thank our panelists for their sharing insights.
